I had seen a few reviews of this brewery’s beers on New Zealand and Australian beer blogs and was curious to see if it was available in the United States.  I was delighted to see that it was.  Renaissance Brewing is one of the newer breweries to emerge from the growing quality craft brewing scene in New Zealand.  The label is quite striking on its 500ml bottle.  When I saw pictures of the label on the other blogs, I was curious to try this beer.  Now, I know you’re saying the attractiveness of the label doesn’t matter, but let’s be real: It does.  Sight is the first sense engaged in the buying process and in the drinking process.  Fortunately, the label quality is matched by what’s in the bottle.

Appearance: Deep black with a rich, thick light brown head.  Ok retention.

Aroma: Bitter chocolate, mocha, coffee, burnt and roasty.

Taste: Chocolate, coffee with burnt edges.  Touches of oatmeal sweetness.  A thick, rich mouthfeel.

Overall Impression:  This is a great beer to accompany dessert or be dessert.  It packs a lot of flavor and enjoyment into its 500ml.  If you enjoy dark, rich beers this is a great one to try.

Availability: In larger cities at better beer stores.  Check Shelton Brothers for details (their US importer).

4.9% ABV
