Ommegang Bend the Knee “Game of Thrones”

Brewery Ommegang has been brewing a series of licensed beers for the HBO TV series Game of Thrones. Their newest entrant into their Game of Thrones series is called Bend the Knee and features 3 collectible bottles highlighting House Stark, House Lannister, and House Targaryen. Although there are 3 collectible bottles, the beer inside each is the same Belgian-style Golden Ale brewed with wild flower honey.

Appearance: Lightly hazy blond, off white head, great head retention.

Aroma: Floral, spicy, honey hints, honey malt, speculoos, peach, light banana notes.

Taste: Honey, biscuit, speculoos, banana creme, grassy notes.

Overall Impression: As is the case with Ommegang’s beers, they’re spot on with the interpretation of Belgian-style beers. The addition of the honey, usually not one of my favorite beer ingredients, is deftly handled and adds a touch of subtle complexity. The addition doesn’t take the beer too sweet. The Saaz, Styrian Golding, and Bravo hops give it a nice European hop kick that keeps everything nicely in balance. Pick your favorite house or get them all. The beer is tasty and dangerously drinkable. Even The Imp might drop his wine for a goblet of this!

Availability: Just released, available for a limited time.

9.2% ABV

Notes: These samples were sent to me for review by Brewery Ommegang. I started with the House Stark bottle, of course…

  1. That one sounds quite tasty. The only Game of throne beers I had tried a few years back were not all that great and I found that odd for the brewery.
