Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Blanca

Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza BlancaJolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales is one of the new wave of American breweries playing with funky strains from Europe.  Founded in 2004, Jolly Pumpkin uses open fermenters and a specially selected blend of French and Belgian strains.  They joined the Michigan brewing scene which is quickly gaining notoriety around the country. 10 years later they’re making some highly respected funky beers with unique character and great flavor.

Calabaza Blanca is Jolly Pumpkin’s interpretation of a Belgian wit.

Appearance: Hazy blonde, white head, great retention.

Aroma: Funky, orange peel, spicy, light pineapple, touch of solvent (not negatively).

Taste: Earthy, coriander, bready, pepper and citrus in the finish.

Overall Impression: This is an impressive Belgian white.  It’s funky, complex, and flavorful without taking away the drinkability of the style.  The finish is medium-long with a nice amount of dryness.  This is a very enjoyable Wit, one worth seeking out.

Availability: Year round where Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales are sold.  In various parts of the United States, Jolly Pumpkin beers are distributed through Shelton Brothers‘ network.

4.8% ABV

  1. I just tried this last night and was really quite impressed. To me, the aroma and flavors were very funky and bitter grapefruit along with the obvious sourness from the Brett, but i failed to notice any peppercorn or oak notes even in passing. This was very tastey and easy to drink, I’d definitely buy it again.
