Driftwood Brewery Fat Tug IPA

Driftwood Fat Tug IPADriftwood Brewery’s Fat Tug IPA was one of the first beer I opened from my first beer exchange with Leapbeer.  While I did taste this beer and take my notes when this beer was fresh, somehow posting the review slipped through the cracks!

This brewery got it’s start in 2008, making it one of the newer breweries I’ve tried from the Victoria area.  So far, I have been very impressed with the quality and variety of beers this brewery has put out.  Fat Tug IPA is considered a Northwest-style IPA.

Appearance: Copper Amber, light tan head, touch of haze, solid retention.

Aroma: Touch of biscuit/breadiness, spicy hops, citrus, pine, grapefruit peel.  Very typical of a “NW-style IPA.”

Taste: Citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruit with a nice bitter kick.

Overall Impression:  Fat Tug is a very nice representation of a Northwest-style IPA.  It’s got a good hop character with a fairly sharp hop bitterness.  It still has a nice bit of malt sweetness to balance out the profile though.  If you see this beer, it’s worth a try.  It’s great to see our Canadian neighbors putting out some good craft beer!

Availability: Victoria, BC; British Columbia; and Seattle, WA.

7% ABV

  1. No way, this is the first time you’ve had this beer? We need to network, all of us beer snobs north and south of the 49th. I can think of several beers I would send you, and would be eager to see what I got back 😉

  2. In Vancouver this beer is considered by most the best BC IPA although I do not agree it is still an amazing IPA and something I do go back to often. Now Driftwood makes one of the best two barleywines in BC. You can get it in Bellingham at Elizabeth Station some times. It is called Old Cellar Dweller.
