New Belgium Brewing‘s Transatlantique Kriek is a collaboration beer made Kriek Lambic shipped from Brouwerij Boon in Belgium with beer brewed in Fort Collins.  The Boon portion of the beer was aged for two years in oak before being shipped to the US.  (You can read about my adventures at Brouwerij Boon durin my vaction.)  The New Belgium portion of the beer is a full-bodied golden lager.  The two beers are blended to create a whole new taste experience.  This beer isn’t released very often.  It’s been at least 3 years, if I’m remembering correctly.

Appearance: Cranberry red with pink highlights.  Pink head with great retention.

Aroma: Pie cherries, cherries, berry and plum notes, and a touch of lemon zest.

Taste: Tart cherry and dark fruit with hints of chocolate.  A fruity/spicy finish.

Overall Impression: This is a really enjoyable collaboration/blend.  You get to try a European classic with an inventive American all in one beer.  The overall balance and flavor profile make this a good beer to introduce people to sours.  The complexity will keep the beer geek happy.  This beer only comes a long every few years.  Treat yourself and pick one up to enjoy.

Availability: In markets where the Lips of Faith series are sold, look at your better bottle shops and restaurants.

8% ABV

    1. Definitely do so! The current batch is really great. Also, they just released their La Folie 2013 (their Flemish-style Red). It’s as good as anything coming out of Belgium in the category.
