Logsdon Organic Farmhouse Ales Peche ‘n Brett 2013

Logsdon Peche N BrettThe next sour or “wild” beer in my series of New Year’s Sour Reviews is the newly released Logsdon Organic Farmhouse Peche ‘n Brett.  Logsdon is one of the newer “sweethearts” of the Oregon brewing scene and has quickly rocketed to national fame winning a Gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2012 for their Seizoen Bretta.  The Seizoen Bretta is their standard Seizoen (Saison) brewed with the addition of Brettanomyces (follow this link to read about wild yeast).

The Peche ‘n Brett takes the Seizeon Bretta to its next level of evolution by adding peaches to create a secondary fermentation.  The Brettanomyces then eats all that extra sugar.  The great thing about Brett, besides its funky flavor, is that it is capable of eating complex sugars that the standard beer yeast, Saccharomyces, can ‘t.  This allows for a much more thorough fermentation leading to a very dry beer.  The 2012 release of the Peche ‘n Brett won gold at the World Beer Cup.  With the success of the 2012 release, many people were eagerly awaiting the release of the 2013 batch.  Many outlets sold out within the first few hours.  I grabbed two bottles, one of which I immediately put in my cellar (a Vinotemp wine cooler).  I’ll probably break it out next year to taste with the 2014 batch.

Appearance: Cloudy Blonde/Gold with an off-white head.  Good retention.

Aroma: Peach, vanilla, soft tropical fruits, pineapple, light barnyard.  There was also a faint touch of DMS (Dimethyl Sulfide) that blew off pretty quickly.  It wasn’t a negative note, but just added another touch of funky complexity.

Taste: Over-ripe peaches, pineapple, a touch of sweetness, soft acidity, funk.  It finished with a nice lingering bit of brett funk.

Overall Impression:  I’m really excited to see what this beer can do in my cellar.  I didn’t get a chance to try last year’s batch, but I’m going to make sure this is on my yearly list of beers to buy.  Be sure to let it warm up a bit.  It’s a touch closed at fridge temps, but opens up nicely over time with some “hand warming.”  You’ll truly be able to enjoy the well-blended peach and brett notes.  I was able to enjoy this beer over the period of an evening.  The exceptional dryness allows this beer to be enjoyable without getting cloying.

Availability: Logsdon beers are now available in Oregon, Washington, California, Arizona, and British Columbia.  I’m not sure how deep into this footprint the Peche ‘n Brett will make it, but keep an eye out for it.  It’s a bit spendy.  You’ll have to decide if it’s worth it for you.

10% ABV
