Cantillon Classic Gueuze

Cantillon Classic GueuzeBrasserie Cantillon brews and blends what are arguably the world’s most sought after Lambics and Gueuzes.  Cantillon beers are consistently on the top of people’s trade list and have become “white whales” for many beer fans.  While personally, I’m not a fan of this trend in general; I am excited that a small Belgian brewery that nearly faced extinction 50 years ago has become one of the most renowned brands in the world.

This is in large part thanks to Jean-Pierre Van Roy and his son, Jean Van Roy.  They took over Cantillon from their in-laws and turned it from a sweet Lambic producer into the one of the top authentic Lambic and Gueuze producers.  If you’d like to read a little more on the history of Cantillon, you can read the piece I did for Wonderful Wanderings.

Cantillon Classic Gueuze would be the entry-level beer for Cantillon’s line.  It’s a true Gueuze with no special twists.  It’s a blend of 1-year old, 2-year old, and 3-year old Lambics refermented in the bottle with no added sugars or flavors.

Appearance: Hazy honey/gold with amber highlights, lt tan head, great retention.

Aroma: Lemon, lime, pepper, grapefruit pith, green apple, stone fruit pits, brown sugar/caramel, light to moderate funk, mushroom earthiness.

Taste: Tart bordering on sour, sour citrus, earthy, onion/pepper in the finish.

Overall Impression:  This is an impressive beer with a nice level of complexity.  It definitely angles more to the funkier side than some Gueuzes but still has a great deal of fruitiness to balance the funk.  It is indeed a classic! And one you should try if you can find it.

    1. We hardly ever see any here in Oregon. Fortunately my friend at my favorite shop stashes a bottle for me when it does come in. I’ve drank several of their beers over the years and have always enjoyed them thoroughly.

  1. I am glad that Cantillon has become less rare in BC Canada. We even got the Lu Pepe and Fou Foune although in extremely limited numbers. I look forward to opening them in the future but then it is always exciting to get something as good as Cantillon.
