Samuel Adams 13th Hour Stout

Samuel Adams 13th Hour StoutSamuel Adams, also know as the Boston Beer Company, is one of the largest Craft Beer companies in the US. Their lager is available coast to coast.   However, some of their new projects are really reminding people that Samuel Adams is still a force to be reckoned with when it comes to special releases and unique and interesting beers.  In particular, their Barrel Room Collection has been putting out some excellent beers at a great price.  I reviewed their Stony Brook Red previously.

The 13th Hour Stout is a Belgian-style stout that has been aged in oak.  It’s using a huge variety of malts and brewing sugars as well as 2 strains of yeast: Belgian ale yeast and Champagne yeast.

Appearance: Deep brown with ruby highlights, tan head, great retention.

Aroma: Molasses, dark rum, bitter chocolate, coffee, ash, cocoa.

Taste: Chocolate, spice, alcohol warmth, figs dates, oaky finish.

Overall Impression: What a nice, complex, and subtle beer!  It kind of tastes a bit like a hybrid between a Belgian-style Stout and a Quad-style.  It’s nicely balanced with only a bit of sweetness and hints of Belgian yeast character.  For the price, this is a really good beer to pick up.

Availability: At better beer stores across the country.

9% ABV
