Unicorn Brewery Robinson’s Old Tom

Robinson's Old TomUnicorn Brewery Robinson’s Old Tom Strong Ale has been brewed since 1899 using the same recipe the entire time.  The beer was named after the brewery’s cat, Old Tom.  Robinson’s Brewery has been owned by the Robinson family since 1838 when the founder bought the Unicorn Inn.  Since then, they’ve continued to expand becoming the largest family brewery in North West England.  This year, 2013, marks the brewery’s 175th Anniversary!

Old Tom is a classic Strong Ale and has won many awards over its illustrious life, including World’s Best Ale at the World Beer Awards.

Appearance: Rich Brown, tan head, good retention.

Aroma: Raisins, brandy, molasses, spice and pepper notes, alcohol notes.

Taste: Chocolate, molasses, really spicy, pepper, cherries, dark fruit, wine notes.

Overall Impression: Old Tom has great English yeast character that’s very distinctive at higher alcohol levels.  What a great, complex English Strong Ale.  I’m excited to see more quality English beers in the US.  If you like stronger dark beers, this one’s a great choice for an evening of sipping pleasure.

Availability: Look for this beer where Artisanal Imports products are available.

8.5% ABV
